Kids BJJ Classes in St. Albert (Ages 8–13)
Build Strength, Confidence and Real Martial Arts Skills
At Hayabusa Training Centre in St. Albert, our Junior BJJ program for ages 8 to 13 helps youth develop confidence, self-discipline, and genuine respect in a structured and supportive environment. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the best martial arts for this age group because it teaches practical self-defense, critical thinking, and physical fitness through engaging, hands-on technique.
If you are looking for a positive activity that channels your child’s energy into physical, emotional, and social growth, our Junior BJJ program is an excellent place to start.
Why BJJ Is Perfect for Ages 8 to 13
Between the ages of 8 and 13, children are capable of amazing physical and mental growth. Our program capitalizes on this by moving beyond basic play to rapid skill development. Students learn real technique, including takedowns, sweeps, submissions, and escapes. These naturally improves their fitness and athleticism. You will see gains in agility, balance, and coordination that translate to every other sport they play.
Beyond the physical, we focus on discipline and focus. BJJ requires attention to detail and goal-setting, strengthening their attention span for school and life. In our supportive team environment, they learn confidence and respect, handling pressure while lifting up their teammates. Finally, we arm them with bully-prevention skills, teaching them the assertiveness and boundary-setting needed to navigate social challenges safely.
A Safe, Technical and Challenging Environment
We have designed our Junior program to strike the perfect balance between safety and real-world challenge. Students engage in controlled drilling to master their mechanics before being introduced to age-appropriate sparring. This allows them to test their skills against resistance without the risk of injury. Our mats are governed by clear rules and positive coaching, ensuring discipline is maintained through encouragement rather than intimidation. Above all, we foster a respect-based culture where teammates support one another, creating an environment where every child feels safe to fail, learn, and grow.
What Students Learn in the 8–13 Program
Technical Jiu-Jitsu Skills: At this age, students are capable of learning complex movements. We teach a complete system including open and closed guards, passing systems, and takedowns. Students learn smooth transitions and are introduced to basic submissions with a heavy emphasis on control and safety.
Live Training (Rolling): We use live training to teach “Human Chess.” Rolling isn’t about fighting; it’s about strategy and problem-solving. Your child will learn to stay calm under pressure, thinking their way out of difficult spots while a partner offers resistance.
Character Development: The mat is a training ground for life. Beyond the physical, we explicitly foster resilience and teamwork. As students progress, they are given opportunities to demonstrate leadership, helping newer students and setting the tone for the class.
Competition Optional (Never Required)
Our coaching team has taken gold medals in world championships but none of them have forgotten the trepidation of that first competition or very first competitive match. Many of our students will never formally ‘compete’ although they do more in combat in a week of training that most will do in their entire lives. However, if your child wants to explore competition, we can help guide them whether that is trying an in-house competition with familiar training partners, entering a local competition or even dreaming bigger. It is their journey, we are here to facilitate the achievement of their objectives and goals.
Beginner Friendly – No Experience Needed
People start at all skill levels — structured groups. The vast majority of our students have zero or negligible previous experience.
