Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

Build Confidence, Coordination and Focus Through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

At Hayabusa Training Centre in St. Albert, our Kids BJJ program helps children develop confidence, discipline, balance and respect in a fun and safe environment. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the best martial arts for early childhood development because it teaches problem-solving, teamwork and body awareness in a playful and age-appropriate way.

If you are looking for a positive activity that supports your child’s physical, emotional and social growth, our Kids BJJ program is an excellent place to begin.

Beginner-Friendly and Perfect for First Timers

If your child is brand new to martial arts, they are in good company—most children who join our program have never stepped on a mat before. We make the introduction seamless and fun by teaching BJJ step-by-step. Rather than strict drills, we utilize games that build balance and coordination and playful challenges that encourage natural movement. Your child will learn simple positions and engage in partner drills that teach teamwork, making this the perfect, low-pressure start to their athletic journey.

Keeping BJJ Classes Age Appropriate

At Hyabusa Training Centre, we believe that martial arts is a lifelong journey that begins with age-appropriate instruction. To best serve our students, we have divided our youth program into three specialized groups: our 4–7 year olds focus on foundational motor skills, fun, and focus; the 8–13 year old group transitions into sharper technique, discipline, and confidence-building; and our 14–18 year olds train in a more advanced, high-energy environment that emphasizes fitness, real-world self-defense, and mental resilience.

Key aspects of BJJ Include:

  1. Positioning: Understanding how to achieve dominant positions on the ground, like mount, side control or back control.
  2. Submissions: Techniques used to force an opponent to give up, such as joint locks or chokehols.
  3. Escapes: Learning how to get our of bad positions or escape from submission attempts.
  4. Sparring: Practicing techniques with a partner in a controlled environment, which is often called “rolling”
